Vacations should be a time of relaxation, fun and family time; it should also still be a time where oral hygiene is important!
Vacations are a truly fantastic time where families can come together, get away from the stress of everyday life and explore the world. Many people look forward to their vacations and see it as a time to create fond family memories and rejuvenate. There is a myriad of considerations to think about before and during your vacation – What should you pack? How much spending money should you take? How will you travel to the airport? What activities and day trips would you like to undertake during your trip? One simple but important aspect that many people often forget about or neglect during vacation time is your oral health – How can you maintain healthy teeth while traveling?
Preparation is key – Pack the essentials!
Being sufficiently prepared can greatly help improve your oral hygiene during a vacation. Before you set off on that plane, ensure that you have packed the essentials! Does everyone have their toothbrush? Do you have a supply of toothpaste that will last for your whole trip? Do you need to purchase any mouthwash at the airport? Make a simple list containing the items you need – This can include toiletries and other accessories like electronics too. If you do not have the essentials, how can you hope to maintain healthy teeth while traveling?
Form a suitable routine that works around your family time
Vacation time means fun time! If you are not relaxing on a beach, you might be sight-seeing or engage in a dizzying amount of adventurous activities. This busy schedule can often mean you have no time for dental care. To rectify this, ensure that you set aside a small amount of time to dedicate to your family’s oral health. Create a schedule and ensure that it is adhered too – After breakfast time and after your evening meal are prime times to fit in your dental routine. If you only set aside 10-15 minutes, that time can still be used for brushing and dental care! You can also teach your children about the importance of dental care so they understand why they must spend part of their vacation cleaning their teeth!
Try and maintain a healthy diet (we know this will be hard!)
Healthy eating on holiday can often prove to be nightmare – There is always a wide range of unhealthy foods, tempting desserts, and sumptuous sweets to gorge yourself silly on! As hard as it might be, try to maintain a healthy diet and cut back on those tempting treats. Try and minimize the amount of fizzy drinks and sweets that your children consume and ensure they still eat regular wholesome meals. Some leeway is acceptable as a vacation should be a time when you indulge at least a little! Control and discipline are the key!
Follow these simple steps and you should be able to maintain healthy teeth while traveling! If you plan carefully and take the appropriate steps, there is no reason why your family’s dental care can be a hassle-free procedure that has minimal impact on your exciting vacation plans!
